They're beautiful, detailed and effortlessly wearable—we thought it would be nice to share a little about where they actually come from.

A Little History

Jhumkas have been worn across India for centuries. The name comes from the Hindi word jhumna, meaning "to sway" or "to dangle", inspired by the way the earrings move when worn.

They've long been part of Indian jewellery traditions, especially in South India, where intricate bell-shaped earrings became closely associated with temple jewellery, celebrations and classical dance. Over time, different regions developed their own styles, from ornate bridal jhumkas to the delicate micro versions we love today.

Our collection is inspired by these lightweight South Indian designs—perfect for everyday wear while still honouring the craftsmanship behind them.

The Story Behind the Jhumka: A Design That Has Stood the Test of Time

Jhumkas aren't just beautiful earrings—they're one of the oldest and most recognisable jewellery styles in the Indian subcontinent.

Their history stretches back over 2,000 years. Archaeologists have found bell-shaped earrings in ancient sculptures and carvings dating to the Mauryan and Gupta periods (around the 3rd century BCE to the 6th century CE), showing that similar designs have been worn for centuries. As kingdoms and dynasties rose across India, the jhumka evolved too, with each region adding its own distinctive touch.

In South India, jhumkas became closely linked with temple jewellery. Crafted in gold and inspired by temple architecture, flowers and nature, they were worn by royalty, brides and classical dancers, particularly in Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi. Many of today's lightweight jhumkas still borrow from these traditional designs.

Fashion is constantly evolving, and jewellery travels across cultures. That's one of the things we love most about it.

But sometimes, as styles become popular around the world, their cultural roots can get a little lost. Calling jhumkas simply "boho" misses the rich heritage and artistry behind them. They aren't a passing trend—they're a design that has been cherished and reimagined for generations.

That doesn't mean you can't wear them with a floaty dress, denim or your favourite everyday outfit (we definitely do!). It just means it's worth knowing and celebrating where the inspiration comes from.

As South Asian Heritage Month is celebrated throughout July, it's the perfect opportunity to appreciate the stories behind the pieces we wear and the incredible craftsmanship that continues to inspire jewellery lovers around the world. The month celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of South Asian communities, making it a fitting time to shine a light on jewellery traditions like the jhumka.
